About Us

Built as a farmhouse in 1849, the West Mountain Inn was transformed into a special country retreat by the Carlson family in 1978. The Inn's lovely flower gardens, stone walls, mountain views, lily ponds, and llamas immerse guests in the beauty and tranquility of Vermont. Miles of snowshoeing or hiking trails and the Battenkill River provide seasonal outdoor activities just steps from the Inn's front door. Guests enjoy a hearty country breakfast and an exquisitely prepared fireside dinner in the romantic, wood-paneled dining room. Private dining, meeting rooms, and 100 year old Vermont barn provide a variety of unique spaces for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions or business meetings. Still owned and operated by the Carlson family and their long-time staff, the inn's warm and welcoming ambience is one of the main reasons guests find themselves returning again and again.

Between breakfast and dinner, many guests have a wonderful day without ever leaving the Inn's property. Hiking on the Inn's 150 acres of woodland trails, snowshoeing around the property, tubing, canoeing or fishing on the Battenkill River (a world renowned trout stream and heaven for fly-fishermen) can all be done just by stepping out the door. Or for an even more relaxing take on the day, guests enjoy our gameroom, read books from our library, sleep in, take naps, share a drink, sit by the fire, or just sit on the Adirondack chairs and take in the fresh air and mountain views.

Guest Rooms

Guest Rooms at the Inn are housed in three separate buildings: The Main Inn, The Cottage in the Pines and The Historic Mill Building. The Main Inn has 14 guest rooms, including several suites, a handicapped accessible room and even a large apartment. Each romantic guest room has something unique to enchant - fireplaces, canopy beds, fabulous views, private porches, sitting rooms and reading nooks all beckon. If you must be "connected" to the real world, our wi-fi network is free for you to use! The Cottage in the Pines was the home in which the Carlson's raised their family. It is part way up the driveway and is now home to three charming separate guest rooms, each with it's own private bath. In the Cottage there is also a shared living room with woodburning fireplace and a small kitchen. The Historic Mill Building was an old mill that was turned into three Townhouse apartments. Each apartment has two bedrooms and a bath upstairs and a living room and kitchen downstairs. Perfect for families, the townhouses also have satellite TVs and offer a little more room to spread out!

Dining

Dining here at the Inn is a very important part of your stay. Chef Jeff Scott prepares fine New England fare with only the freshest of ingredients. Everything that is served is made in our kitchen using local, organic produce, free-range meats and poultry, seasonal game, local cheeses and dairy products, fresh-daily fish and home-baked breads, pastries and desserts. Dinner starts with an Artisan Cheese Selection in the Bar, followed by a fabulous 5-course meal in our romantic wood-paneled dining room with fireplace, candle light and fabulous views. The Inn serves a sumptuous, multi-course breakfast each morning with fresh-baked muffins, omelets, pancakes and even dessert! To find recipes for several of our favorite dishes, go to our RECIPES section. We reserve the dining room first for our inn guests and then take reservations for outside diners, so please call ahead for reservations. The Inn's dining room, including a private dining room ideal for small parties, is open to the public by reservation. Our historic 100 year-old barn is the perfect place for a rehearsal dinner, wedding reception, conference or other gathering.
